On the late Christopher Rouse, from the composer Donald Elfman:
I labored with Chris at Sam Goody’s in Philadelphia when he was learning with George Crumb. I used to be a jazz man, or so I believed, however Chris shared his love and data of orchestral repertoire and rock music with me. The truth is most of what I learn about Nielsen and Sibelius and Berlioz and … comes from him.
I stayed at his residence in downtown Philly one night time and we listened to Janacek, Nielsen, two full Berlioz operas and Led Zeppelin along with watching The Tonight Present with Johnny Carson. We acquired to mattress about 5 AM and made it to the document retailer for our 9 AM shift.
From the artist Suzanne McDermott:
Why do I wish to begin with an expletive? Why are there no on-line photographs of the white bread, string bean, younger Chris Rouse? (My ream of handwritten letters from Chris in our youth together with a cartoon self-portrait are deep in storage.) How might I clarify what a profound affect on my life and ears and music our intense relationship stamped upon me? Why has this come as such a shock? Oy. The lengthy Philadelphia periods at Pop Edwards with Donald Elfman over Elephant Beer or Vodka and soda with Rose’s Lime after work at Wanamaker’s Music Division, Tower Data, and George Crumb. The extraordinary listenings to Symphonie Fantastique (and positively extra) the place I actually realized to listen to each single notice and each single little bit of an orchestra and programmatic story. The presents that Chris and Don made me of the most effective and newest Mahler and Joni Mitchell recordings. My lengthy bus rides to Ithaca the place Chris insisted that I sit in on percussion with the Cornell Wind Ensemble by way of unattainable readings of Hindemith and experimental music live shows at excruciating quantity with doorways locked and Karel Husa asleep behind me. And the downtime after I poured by way of Chris’s binders of correspondence from Varése, Copeland, Schumann, Honneger, and extra (what enjoyable!). Proper. Copeland wrote to Chris as “Chip”. Chip Rouse knew what he wished to do from age 11 (a minimum of) and made a direct bee line by way of Oberlin, Crumb in Philadelphia, Cornell, and so forth. Chris realized every part there was to find out about orchestral (he was fairly particular) composition, courted the best American (and extra) composers from his pre-teens, honed his craft, taught what he was greatest at at the most effective faculties (Eastman and Julliard), schmoozed the shit out of his career as a result of he was past worthy of doing so. He adopted the imprints (in ridiculously intimate and religious methods) of his faves, i.e. Hector B. Christopher Rouse is the penultimate instance of a totally realized life. From our intimate days in Philadelphia (with Mr. Donald), obsessive about music, we flowed into the realms of classical, jazz and folks. What magnificent pleasure we shared…listening. Thanks, Chris for every part you opened my ears to. You had been the great and whacky bridge from my father, Sam Goody, and Theodore Presser to the world past. Thanks, Don, for calling me instantly. Good job, Chris. You hit all of the marks and enriched my life alongside the way in which. Love you, honey. Thanks for inviting me to your Requiem in LA. It was a beautiful expertise throughout. Could there be a great deal of white bread and mayo in heaven. Onze, onze. Unhappy face. Fare thee nicely, Christopher Rouse. Many thanks and plenty of love. Relaxation in peace, darling. Oh, simply realized. The excellent news is that you could be be evaluating notes with Hector, Anton, and okay, perhaps Lenny if he would allow you to get a phrase in edgewise.
